Imo State University is a state-owned university that is located in OwerriOwerri, which is the capital city of Imo State.
Imo State University is one of the oldest state-owned universities in Nigeria; it was established in 1981 by a law that was passed by the Imo State House of Assembly.
Imo State University, as of the time of its establishment, was located at its temporary site in the Federal University of Technology Owerri, where it operated from four buildings before it was turned over to Imo State University for permanent use when the Federal University of Technology Owerri moved to its permanent site.
Academic activities commenced briefly after the establishment of Imo State University, but the first admission of students through JAMB was conducted in February 1993.
In 1991 a proposal was made by the governor of Imo State, Governor Chief Evan Enwerem, which was to reconstruct the buildings and infrastructure that are needed for Imo State University operation. The construction stretched for over 5 years, and thus in 1996 Imo State University was moved to Owerri, where it has been operating since then.

Admission Requirements
● Candidates must have chosen Imo State University, Owerri, as their first choice and scored a minimum of 150 in the UTME.
● Candidates who did not choose Imo State University as their first choice university but scored the required cut-off mark may also apply on the condition that they visit the JAMB website and change their institution of first choice to Imo State University, Owerri, before the close of the POST-UTME application process.
● Direct Entry candidates must be holders of OND/HND/First Degree, ‘A’ Level, or their equivalents in relevant disciplines and subjects.
● Candidates must ensure that their qualifying results are uploaded to JAMB.
● Candidates whose ‘O’ Level results are being awaited are advised to also upload the same to JAMB as soon as the results are released. Candidates that failed to upload their results to JAMB will not be considered for admission.
HOW TO APPLY FOR ADMISSION
● Visit the university website at https://imsuonline.edu.ng and click on the 2025/26 Post UTME/Direct Entry Application.
● Enter your JAMB registration number to check for eligibility. If eligible, proceed to make payment.
● Enter correctly, your JAMB Reg. Number Only as the invoice number. Make a payment of ₦2,000 Naira and generate a receipt.
● Go back to https://imsuonline.edu.ng after 24 hours of completing payment and click on the 2025/26 Post UTME/Direct Entry Application again to complete the application form. For easier access, candidates are encouraged to use IMSU Microfinance Bank.
● Present the acknowledgement slip at the PUTME/DE screening venue on the date of the screening/examination.
